We all know Lupita Nyong’o is a multi-talented woman, but did you know the Oscar winning actress is skilled in hair-braiding too?
A video on Vogue captures Nyong’o on camera as she discusses her love for braiding hair. As she hovers of the head of one of her close friends, Nyong’o explains that she began braiding hair as a young child after her aunt — who owned a hair salon in Kenya — taught her how to corn row, box braid and twist hair.
“When I got back to school from learning how to braid hair in Kenya, I also decided it was going to be my side hustle. I was going to make some money braiding people’s hair,” Nyong’o told Vogue. “So I went to the great troubles of creating a poster — but I just didn’t have the heart to charge anyone.”
The current Vogue cover girl says she never profited from her services — but that’s because the craft held a lot more significance to her.
“For me, braiding hair is an intimate thing,” Nyong’o said. “It’s getting up close and personal, and I like to do it for people I know and love and trust.”
