Stephen A. Smith gets one-week suspension

ESPN announced Tuesday evening that First Take anchor Stephen A. Smith has been suspended for one-week following his controversial remarks on domestic violence during last week’s show.

While discussing Ray Rice’s 2-game suspension from the NFL, Smith suggested that a woman should not provoke a man into hitting her.

His comments went viral, even drawing criticism from fellow ESPN anchor Michelle Beadle via Twitter.

In a pre-taped segment that was aired before Monday’s edition of First Take, Smith apologized and promised to be a better communicator in the future.

“I believe his apology was sincere and that he and we have learned from what we’ve collectively experienced,” ESPN’s Chief Executive John Skipper told the Associated Press.

The network suspended and ultimately fired commentator Rob Parker last year after he stated his opinions on Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Smith will not appear again on ESPN or ESPN Radio until August 6.
