No Good Deed takes top spot in box offices this week, injecting lots of testosterone and adrenaline into the silver screen.
The thriller, which stars both Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, pushed ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy, the season’s current box-office champion, by earning an estimated total of $24.5 million during its opening weekend, reports USA Today.
In the movie, Elba plays the role of a charming stranger who terrorizes a housewife, played by Henson. The storyline may have been distressing for critics, as the movie garnered a measly 12% approval rating from critics on RottenTomatos.com.
Audiences, however, think otherwise, as they responded favorably to the movie. Seventy-one percent of audiences gave No Good Deed a thumbs up.
This Screen Gems film is a low-budget movie, produced on a tight budget of $13 million, but it has already made its mark early.
Sitting right behind No Good Deed in the weekend box office is Dolphin Tale 2 – a sequel following the 2011 box office hit Dolphin Tale about a tailless dolphin named Winter. The movie stars Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr and took home $16.6 million in its opening weekend. It also scored well both on RottenTomatoes.com and with moviegoers, with 73% and 82% ratings, respectively.
Guardians of the Galaxy follows in third place with $8 million. The film stars Chris Pratt and has occupied the top spot for four out of six weekends since its release.
In fourth place is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which brought in $4.8 million during its sixth week. The comedy Let’s Be Cops is in the fifth rank with $4.3 million. In the last spot is The Drop which stars Tom Hardy and which made $4.2 million during its first weekend. The Drop also stars James Gandolfini in his final role.
Final figures are expected to be released today.
