Just six days after its premiere episode debuted on Starz, the new basketball comedy series Survivor’s Remorse was picked up for a second season.
The half-hour show, executive produced by NBA super-star LeBron James, centers around a fictional NBA player Cam Calloway, played by Jesse T. Usher, a young man who signs a contract to play in Atlanta.
The series deals with Calloway’s adjustment to the NBA lifestyle. Survivor’s Remorse follows Calloway as he navigates fame and fortune, along with the guilt involved with leaving friends and family behind in Boston. It is based partly around James’ own experiences adjusting to the NBA and ensuing national spotlight.
Commenting on the renewal, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said, “We’re thrilled with the overwhelming critical acclaim Survivor’s Remorse has received, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with such an all-star team.”
The pickup is an effort to expand the diversity of the Starz programming line-up. In July, Albrecht spoke on the renewal of Power, a crime drama produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson that also features a predominately black cast, saying, “The not-so-surprising secret about Power is that white people don’t watch a lot of shows that don’t have a lot of white faces in them. That’s going to take some time.”
The premiere episode of Survivor’s Remorse drew just over 200,000 viewers during its 9 PM Sunday airing, with repeats and online previews bringing that number to 1.3 million. The number at 9 PM was down 71% from time-travel romance Outlander’s debut in August, according to Deadline. The renewal of the comedy series also bumped up the number of episodes; while the first season will feature just six, the second received an order for ten half hour episodes.
