Whoopi Goldberg breaks down, cries talking about the death of her mentor Mike Nichols

Legendary hollywood director Mike Nichols died today at the age of 83.

Whoopi Goldberg broke down this morning on ABC’s The View while trying to deliver the news of Nichols death to viewers.

“This morning,” Goldberg began before breaking down and sobbing as co-host Nicolle Wallace stepped in asking, “Want me to do it?”

“This morning, news broke that entertainment pioneer Mike Nichols died suddenly of cardiac arrest while at home with friends and family,” she said.

Goldberg and Nichols had an insperable friendship in Hollywood. The Graduate director was responsible for discovering Goldberg and helping her launch her film career.

“He gave her the entire beginning of her career and recognized her brilliance before anyone else,” co-host Rosie O’Donnell added.

Nichols is survived by his 68-year-old wife and former anchor of ABC World News Tonight, Diane Sawyer.
