A 10-year-old Miami girl was listening to music and playing on her tablet when her great-grandmother suddenly attacked her.
Iona Aiken, 79, was arrested for aggravated child abuse. She allegedly hit the child four times in the head and once on the shoulder with a metal hammer “without warning and for unknown reason,” reports NBC Miami.
Neighbor Dora Anderson rushed to stop the bleeding and then take the girl to a hospital. She says she nearly fainted from the sight of all the blood.
Anderson also said she was surprised by Aiken’s outburst. “I’m surprised at this because I knew she had been sick because she took care of me when I was sick,” she said. “I was very sick, I couldn’t walk and she took me to go shopping and to the doctor, but I didn’t know she was this sick.”
The judge at Aiken’s arrangement said Aiken should have “no contact with the mother and child.” She has been released into a treatment program on $10,000 bond.
The child was taken to Baptist Hospital where she was treated for a concussion and laceration to the head.
