Police say woman fatally shot in Atlanta escaped handcuffs, fired at officers from patrol car

ATLANTA (AP) — Authorities say a woman killed by police in Atlanta after she fired at them from the backseat of a patrol car first escaped from her handcuffs.

The woman has been identified as 26-year-old Alexia Christian. Atlanta Police Chief George Turner told reporters Friday that Christian had been arrested seven times by the department and had escaped from handcuffs once before.

Police said officers Omar Thyme and Jeffery Cook were investigating a stolen car call Thursday when they saw a woman inside the vehicle in a parking deck. Cook is an 18-year veteran. Thyme has been with the department for 10 months.

Turner says it’s not clear whether the officers searched Christian. He says department policy advises male officers to use the back of their hand to pat down female suspects.
