A 27-year-old mother is in police custody after leaving her son home alone for the Memorial Day weekend while she traveled out of state.
Kionna Moret of Suffolk, Virginia, told her son to keep her travels “secret” while she ventured to South Carolina. She left the 8-year-old “pre-made corned beef hash and pizza” to eat and was asked to check in using a cell phone “every hour.”
A neighbor called police when the boy came outside to play and told other kids his mother wasn’t home.

Moret is out on bond, but her son is in the care of Child Protective Services, according to a WAVY-TV report.
The neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous when she talked to a WAVY-TV reporter, said it is “frightening” to think this situation has happened before.
“If that’s the parenting that she is going to display, she needs to be retrained and be given the privilege back at a later time,” the neighbor said.
