1 dead, 9 wounded in Detroit block party shooting

A deadly shooting in Detroit has left 9 people injured and 1 man dead after a local family block party turned violent Saturday evening.

Detroit’s WXYZ reports that shots were fired into a crowd of about 400 people who had gathered for a child’s birthday party around 8:30 p.m., killing a still unidentified 20-year-old man and leaving a 46-year-old man in critical condition.

Detroit Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt expressed his frustration in an interview Saturday evening. “There’s kids out here. I’m livid. There’s no excuse, there’s not any excuse why no one is talking,” he said.

The victims ranged in age from 21 to 46, he said, and three of them were women. A 46-year-old man was in critical condition late Saturday night, according to Cassandra Lewis, the department’s Public Information Officer. She said the rest of the victims had injuries that were not life-threatening.

“Through the grace of God no children were shot,” he said.

Investigators have not received any strong leads as to what prompted the shooting or who is responsible for the incident.
