Teen mom killed, toddler injured after tree limb crushes them at Georgia park

A 16-year-old mother was killed and her 1-year-old son was injured when a tree limb fell on them while they were out at a Georgia park.

LaRena Drayton sat down with her son on a park bench after playing on the swing set when she heard “something crack.”

Although Drayton picked up her son and tried to run out of the way, she was not fast enough to avoid the falling tree limb and was crushed beneath it. She was taken, unconscious, to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Her son, Jeremiah, was flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and suffered a skull fracture, according to Drayton’s sister.

Although the tree appeared to be healthy during a preliminary review, the Parks and Recreation Department is investigating the cause of the tree limb’s break.
