Ballerina Misty Copeland honored for historic achievements at City Hall

Misty Copeland, who last month was named principal dancer for the American Ballet Theatre, was honored at New York City’s City Hall for her historic achievement.

Copeland is the first African-American ballerina to hold the coveted principal dancer position.

“It makes me so proud, it still doesn’t feel real,” Copeland said.

At the event, Copeland signed three pairs of ballet slippers and then received a proclamation certificate from Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and Councilwoman Inez Barron. She was also greeted with warm applause from every single member of the city council.

“Her hard work to hone her talents has earned her this distinction,” said Barron.
