Police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the murder of trans woman India Clarke.
Keith Lamayne Gaillard turned himself in on Wednesday, according to a Tampa Bay Times report.
Clarke was found dead last week near a playground near Tampa University Area Community Park.
Police found a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu that Clarke had rented parked near where her body was discovered, and detectives found a used condom, scattered paperwork and a cigar wrapper with Gaillard’s fingerprint inside of the vehicle. DNA on the condom and beneath Clarke’s fingernails was also matched to Gaillard.
A witness also said that he had been told by Gaillard the day after Clarke’s death, “I think I killed somebody.”
Gaillard’s older brother Kendrick Gaillard, 19, does not believe his brother killed Clarke.
“It’s this hot-headed mode,” Kendrick Gaillard told the Tampa Bay Times. “But he can also get blamed easy, too, because he doesn’t know how to talk.”
Kendrick took his brother to turn himself in and filmed the encounter, just to be sure.
“I don’t want them to say my brother wasn’t helping or anything stupid,” the older brother said. “I don’t want them to say he had a broken leg before he came or had problems breathing.
Gaillard is currently being held without bond in Hillsborough County jail.
