Clerical error led to college student's unnecessary arrest

Marcus Green spent several hours in a jail cell unnecessarily.

Police officials thought he was someone else.

Green has no record and is on the Dean’s List at Georgia State University, but a clerical error led to him being taken into police custody and spending several hours in a jail cell.

A letter from the Department of Driver Services sent to Green’s family admitted that there had been a mistake when police arrested and jailed Green for driving on a suspended license. The information said that Green had failed to appear for a court date in Macon, Georgia. In fact, police had the wrong person, and the innocent Green ended up spending a few hours in jail and had to pay the $1,100 cash bond.

“I still have to appear in court on Sept. 1 just to make sure this is completely gone from my record,” Green said.
