Aretha Franklin’s 1972 classic Amazing Grace remains the best-selling gospel album of all-time.
We’ve heard the timeless music and now, thanks to a new documentary, we can see the Queen of Soul doing it live.
Director Sydney Pollack captured the footage more than 40 years ago at the New Temple Missionary Church in Los Angeles, California. Amazing Grace is the title of the forthcoming documentary on the historic event, and it will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
Rolling Stones’ front man Mick Jagger makes a cameo in the audience. For those in attendance, it was surely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
The Detroit Free Press reports that Franklin and her attorney are considering legal action to halt the film release:
It isn’t that I’m not happy about the film, because I love the film itself. It’s just that — well, legally I really should just not talk about it, because there are problems.
