On Thursday night, Jonathan Miller, a newly elected Texas city councilman, was arrested outside his home after being Tasered while on his knees.
Miller, who recently voted to rename a street in honor of Sandra Bland, allegedly stepped in and identified himself as an elected official to police officers when he saw that the officers were questioning four of his fraternity brothers who were practicing a step dance routine.
“It went from me asking questions to me basically being put face down on the ground,” Miller said. He described the experience as yet another example of excessive force by the same department which arrested Bland.
According to police, Miller refused to step back and continued to question police as they were looking into suspicious activity in the neighborhood. He then allegedly pulled back when officers came forward with handcuffs.
“As soon as they started pushing, I pulled out my camera, because if there’s a camera the officer can’t say my battery on my body cam went out or anything like that,” Brandon Woodson told KPRC-TV.
Now, Miller faces charges of interfering with a public servant and resisting arrest but is currently not in custody after bonding out of jail on Friday.
