2 Detroit cops accused of stealing from people they stopped

DETROIT (AP) — Two Detroit police officers are accused of stealing money from people they stopped on the street.

Prosecutors say 28-year-old Charles Lynem and 31-year-old Chancellor Searcy were arraigned Tuesday.

Authorities say money was taken from one man arrested at a gas station and from two other men during pat downs. Prosecutors say circumstances were fabricated in another man’s arrest.

Searcy and Lynem are charged with embezzlement, larceny, misconduct and falsely reporting a felony. Searcy also is charged with failing to uphold the law.

They were released on bond pending a Nov. 3 hearing. They’ve also been suspended from their jobs.

Chief James Craig says the charges reflect a “dark day for the department.”
