RushCard vows to compensate prepaid debit card users for losses

RushCard has been under fire lately after the prepaid debit card company experienced “glitches” that left many of its users unable to access their funds or pay their bills for weeks. Now, the company is trying to right the wrong by offering to compensate its consumers for their losses.

“RushCard pledged that it will reimburse cardholders who experienced financial losses,” the company said in a statement, reports NBC News. “RushCard systems are now fully restored.”

There are still some issues for a few cardholders, but RushCard has maintained that those are normal errors and are not part of the huge “glitch” problems faced earlier.

Brad Hanson, president of RushCard issuer MetaBank, said, “To our knowledge, all the cards have been working since last week. All the cards work except for ongoing issues that are routine… that are not related to the outage.”

Consumer advocate groups, however, are still concerned. They say that the recent problems speak to a need for more oversight and regulation for prepaid debit cards, especially when the market for such cards often consists of families who are not eligible for traditional banking opportunities.

“There are some real questions as to (whether) consumers of prepaid cards have the same rights to access their own money as the rest of us do. All the Tweets from Uncle Rush aren’t going to solve anybody’s trouble,” said US PIRG’s Ed Mierzwinski.
