Black woman charged for making bogus threats against black college students

UNION, N.J. (AP) — A woman has been charged with making fake threats against black students at Kean University in New Jersey.

Kayla-Simone McKelvey is a former Kean student from Union Township and is black. She faces one count of creating a false public alarm, which carries a maximum three- to five-year sentence.

The Union County prosecutor’s office says McKelvey participated in a Nov. 17 rally on racial issues at Kean and then went to a campus library computer and posted anonymous threats on Twitter against black students. Investigators say McKelvey then returned to the rally and tried to raise awareness about the threats.

She’s scheduled to make a court appearance in two weeks.

It wasn’t immediately known if McKelvey had retained an attorney who could comment on the accusations, and The Associated Press couldn’t find a phone number for her.
