Willow Smith drops her surprise debut album

On Friday, Willow Smith surprised us all by dropping a 15-track debut album entitled “Ardipithecus.”

According to Smith, she chose the name for her album because she was “digging deep in the soil” of her heart. The name refers to “Ardipithecu ramidus,” bones which were discovered and believed to be the “roots of humanity” by the National Museum of Natural History.

“I wanted to name my musical compilation after it because, while I was making these songs I was in such a transitional state,” she told USA Today. “Digging deep in the soil of my heart and finding bits and pieces of my ancient self that tell stories, which end up being the lyrics to the songs.”
