School district rallies around basketball coach who lost wife due to labor complicaitons

A Texas community is coming together to help Union Grove Independent School District coach Dee Lewis, who is grieving the loss of his wife.

Lewis’ wife Demetra died during childbirth, while his son, Deshaun, has been placed in the neonatal intensive-care unit.

Sabine High School Assistant Principal Chris Grotemat released a statement on Wednesday saying that the scheduled varsity game this weekend had been cancelled and that the school would be accepting donations to be given to Lewis rather than selling tickets to the game.

“Dee is an important part of our coaching fraternity in East Texas, and our hearts are broken for him,” Grotemat said.

“Team Lewis” shirts are also being sold as part of the effort to help raise money for Lewis to pay for the medical costs for his son as well as the funeral costs for his wife.

Union Grove ISD also released a statement of support, according to a KLTV report:

It is with tremendous sadness that I post this information. Many of you are already aware that Coach Dee lost his wife today. Our UG community is stricken with grief and sadness. Our hearts are breaking during this very difficult time. Please continue to lift Dee, his precious baby and Demetra’s family up in prayer. … During difficult times, character is revealed. I am so proud of our community and school and the support they have shown. Once a Lion, always a Lion.
