On Tuesday, Edmond Police announced that two Two Edmonds-Woodway High School had been expelled and would be detained at Denney Youth Center after the students made racially-charged threats online.

The students, aged 15 and 16, ran an online chat group in which they made threats against the African-American students at their school as well as against the student body as a whole.

The suspects included detailed descriptions of how they intended to kill their targets and made reference to “lynching,” then threatened to put the whole school on lockdown, with “dead bodies” everywhere.

Another student who was in the chat room was disturbed by the threats and called in to the school on Monday, December 7. The school notified the potential victims and then called police. While police investigated, the school expelled the two students as a safety precaution.

“The statements made were shocking and appalling,” said Det. Sergeant Michael Richardson. “Threats of this nature cannot be tolerated in today’s society.”

The students were interviewed during the course of the investigation into the matter and admitted that they had made the threats. However, they denied that they had any intention of actually carrying them out and insisted that they had meant the threats to be funny.
