Iowa cop trying to shoot family’s attacking dog mistakenly kills mom instead

On Thursday, the Iowa Public Information Board pushed for legal action to push the Burlington Police Department to release the records from the day a police officer mistakenly killed a woman when he was instead trying to shoot the family’s attacking dog.

Officer Jesse Hill shot and killed Autumn Steele in January when he was responding to a domestic disturbance call and found her hitting her husband. He fired his gun when the family’s German Shepard, Sammy, leaped onto his back and tried to bite him, but the bullets hit Steele instead.

Hill was cleared of all charges in the incident and returned to work after prosecutors determined that the shooting was justified because of the dog attack. However, only a 12-second video was released of the incident, showing Hill firing twice without warning.

In the video, Hill can be heard shouting “Get your dog!” as Sammy growls in the background. The video does not show the actual dog attack itself.

Now, the Information Board, which oversees open record laws, is pursuing legal action to get more information released than just those 12 seconds.

“I’m, for one, uncomfortable with law enforcement determining what should and shouldn’t be released,” said Information Board member Bill Monroe.
