Illinois State Attorney candidate refuses to apologize for Tiger Woods ‘blackface’ costume
An Illinois GOP candidate for state’s attorney is in hot water after his opponents uncovered a photo on his wife’s Facebook page of him dressed up in blackface.
An Illinois GOP candidate for state’s attorney is in hot water after the media uncovered a photo on his wife’s Facebook page of him dressed up in blackface.
According to the Daily Journal, former Kankakee County public defender Ed Glazar says the photo was taken in 2010 after Tiger Woods got into an altercation with his then-wife over claims of adultery.
Yet he insists that dressing up in blackface — to illustrate what a black athlete would look like after a domestic violence dispute — isn’t racist.
“Jan and I don’t have a racist bone in our bodies,” Glazar said, defending the photo on his wife’s account. “This was not a negative portrayal of a black person. SNL did a very similar spoof on it.”
Glazer believes that instead of being upset at his lack of discretion, constituents should be more upset by the smear campaign he believes has been orchestrated by opponent, Jim Rowe.
“Sleazy politics is making me sick to my stomach,” he stated. “But I’m not going to let him threaten me from running for a job that he’s not capable of handling.
Rowe denies he had anything to do with the pictures being sent to local radio stations over the weekend.
“Crime is an issue in Kankakee County,” said Rowe. “We want victims and families to come forward to work with law enforcement. And this undermines those efforts.”
“I wouldn’t dress up in blackface,” explained Emile Capriotti, another Republican candidate who worked under Glazar for years. “Maybe people don’t know what that signifies for blacks.”
Theodis Pace, the president of the local chapter of the NACCP, is calling for Glazar to bow out of the race altogether.
- “The conduct is unacceptable,” Pace said. “I don’t think it can be tolerated in 2016.”
