The first trailer for the highly controversial Nina Simone biopic, Nina, has just dropped.
The filmmakers only recently announced the release date, April 22, and dropped a poster for the film feature Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone, and now, as the release date approaches, we’ve got a trailer to give us an idea of how this biopic might play out.
The film focuses on Simone’s relationship with her nurse-turned-manager Clifton Henderson, a decision which, in addition to the uproar over casting the lighter-skinned Zoe Saldana, has caused critics to pan the film even before its release as giving Henderson too much credit for Simone’s successes. Most vocal among these critics is Nina Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone Kelly.

The controversy was on top of production problems for the biopic, which had originally cast Mary J. Blige in the lead role before she had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
