On Wednesday, a 21-year-old woman was charged with first-degree rape after she had sexual encounters with a younger male relative over a period of five years, according to police.
The encounters began when the woman, Dereka Chair, was 15 and the victim was only 11, according to NOPD spokesman Tyler Gamble. The sexual relationship ended in 2014.
A first-degree rape charge, previously an aggravated rape charge, is leveled when a victim is overpowered by force or threat or force or by the use of a weapon, or it may be leveled if the victim is under the age of 13, over the age of 65, or disabled.
