Questlove’s father, Lee Andrews, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 79, and Questlove took to Instagram to pen a beautiful open letter to his father after his loss.

Questlove: late night’s most loveable band leader

In the letter, Questlove called his father “the Greatest Teacher in my life” and went on to thank him for all the moments in their lives but especially “for the last 2 conversations we had.”

“I understand why you were so hard on me praying I didn’t succumb to a fate not meant for a teenager in west Philly in the mid 80s,” he wrote. “I didn’t understand it at the time. But I appreciate it now.”
