Inmate who broke out of prison using a toothbrush shank found decapitated 2 weeks after escape

Two weeks after he escaped prison using a toothbrush shank, a former North Carolina inmate was found decapitated.

On April 7, a hunter walking through the woods discovered the naked, partially decomposed and headless body of  26-year-old Kelvin Singleton. Authorities identified the body on Tuesday, and they are still searching for his head, according to Chowan County sheriff Dwayne Goodwin.

“We have interviewed a ton of people,” Goodwin said. “We don’t have a motive or anything at this point — no suspect, no motive.”

Singleton was able to escape from prison using a shank that he carved out of a toothbrush and that he used to threaten a guard to force his release.

The Chowan sheriff’s deputies searched for him using dogs shortly after his break out. They also searched the city of Charlotte where his children and mother resides.

Singleton had been sent to prison in January for robbing a tobacco store with a gun and using the store clerk’s car as the getaway vehicle.  He was slapped with armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted kidnapping, and larceny of a motor vehicle charges.
