Stanford swimmer’s dad thinks jail time is too harsh for “20 minutes” of rape

Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

It looks like “affluenza” has struck again. The father of the Stanford swimmer who was sentenced to only 6 months in prison for sexual assault said that he felt the prison sentence was too harsh.

Brock Turner, 20, was convicted of three felonies, including sexual assault with intent to rape after he assaulted an unconscious woman.

While Turner faced up to 14 years in prison, the judge sentenced him to only 6 months after he said that he was persuaded into leniency by positive character references and the lack of a criminal record. What’s more, the judge said that prison time would have a “severe impact on him.”

The judge’s decision went viral, with many expressing outrage and sharing the victim impact statement that showed the ‘severe impact’ Turner had on his victim.

“I thought there’s no way this is going to trial; there were witnesses, there was dirt in my body, he ran but was caught … Instead, I was told he hired a powerful attorney, expert witnesses, private investigators … That he was going to go to any length to convince the world he had simply been confused. …”

“I was pummeled with narrowed, pointed questions that dissected my personal life, love life, past life, family life, inane questions, accumulating trivial details to try and find an excuse for this guy who had me half naked before even bothering to ask for my name.”

But now, new outcry has been sparked over a statement Turner’s father made asking the judge to grant his son probation instead of jail time and saying that Turner had already paid “a steep price … for 20 minutes of action.”

“He will never be his happy go lucky self with that easy going personality and welcoming smile,” he wrote of his son. “His every waking minute is consumed with worry, anxiety, fear, and depression. You can see this in his face, the way he walks, his weakened voice, his lack of appetite.”

The fury on social media after the statement was released has only kicked up more controversy, with people accusing Turner’s father of being tone deaf and encouraging rape culture.
