Ciara and Russell Wilson moved their wedding from North Carolina because of transgender law

Ciara and Russell Wilson recently tied the knot in London, but flying across the ocean wasn’t always their first choice.

“I did the whole thing — three times. They were first getting married in North Carolina, but they called it off due to the transgender bathroom laws. But it was really done,” wedding planner Mindy Weiss told The Knot.

ESPN reports that in a previous interview, Russell Wilson expressed a desire to use his platform for good.

“I think we all have a responsibility,” Wilson said. “It’s not just on athletes, it’s not just on coaches, it’s not just on anybody in particular. It’s on all of us. I think ultimately it comes down to love and appreciating one another and respect for one another.

“It’s an appreciation for society, an appreciation for the country we live in, an appreciation for the towns and cities that we live in. Ultimately, it comes down to all of us to make sure we appreciate one another.”

North Carolina’s HB2 bill requires transgender people to use the bathroom according to their birth gender versus their current gender identity in public and government establishments. The NBA also decided to move the 2017 All-Star Game out of Charlotte in response to the bill.

Since their lavish wedding in London nearly two months ago, Ciara and Russell have been seen out and about enjoying the married life.

“This is the happiest I have ever been,” Ciara recently told PEOPLE magazine. Check out the couple hitting the town below!
