Chicago student killed walking home after school reportedly turned him away

A 18-year-old Chicago student was shot and killed after reportedly being turned away from school for not wearing a bow tie.

Liz Doss, the mother of a friend of the student, told FOX 32 she went to Excel Academy of South Shore to pick up her son and his friend who had been sent home because they were not wearing bow ties.

They were two blocks from the school when a black car pulled up, and Doss heard shots. “They both turned and run, my son tried to come back for me and I said just keep running.”

A spokesman for Excel Academy disputes Doss’ version of events, insisting the student who was shot left the school “on his own volition.” The spokesman added that Excel Academy does not send students home who violate “uniform policy,” but instead “loan” students the clothing or accessories they need to comply.

While Doss’ son was not injured, the other boy was shot in the abdomen and hand. Doss tried to save him by putting pressure on the wounds.

“I stayed out there with him and I took my shirt off, put pressure to his stomach, I feel like I failed because he still died,” Doss said.

Doss said that the violence in Chicago is only getting worse, and this latest, personal incident, has prompted her decision to move.

“It’s time to go, I love this city that I live in, but it’s time to go, the violence ain’t getting no better,” Doss said.

According to the FOX 32 report, a police investigation is underway.
