Former band teacher sentenced to 30 years for sexually abusing a child

A former elementary school teacher in Fort Bend, Texas, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a child.

According to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s office, Kenyan Rodgers, 45, was found having sex with a 13-year-old girl in a car on the campus of Texas Southern University in 2013.  Rodgers was leading a band camp and the child was an attendee, although neither were affiliated with the university.

Rodgers had been a teacher at Ridgegate Elementary School and engaged in repeated sexual conduct with the child in 2012 and 2013.

In addition to the 30 years for sexual abuse, Rodgers was sentenced to 25 years in Harris County for aggravated sexual assault of a child. The two sentences will run concurrently, and he will not be eligible for release for 30 years.

According to KHOU, prosecutors have applauded the victim for speaking up and reporting the abuse to authorities.
