When ColourPop’s 12 Sculpting Stix were announced, the company was celebrated for creating contour sticks for people will all skin tones, a huge step in the right direction for diversity in the beauty industry.
But while the products themselves are good for diversity, someone in ColourPop’s naming department didn’t get the memo about diversity being a good thing, as the names for the darker skin tone sticks included things like “Yikes,” with the very darkest color called “Typo.”
ColourPop was quick to respond after they were dragged all over social media for the naming debacle, with many users pointing out the problems with naming darker brands after mistakes.
“On behalf of ColourPop, we are sorry and are extremely grateful for our customers’ feedback,” a spokesperson for the brand told BuzzFeed News. “We have taken immediate action to change the shade names and review our naming process to ensure this does not happen again.”
The names have since been changed, with “Yikes” changed to “Bloom” and “Typo” changed to “Platonic.”
