Ava DuVernay’s ’13th’ trailer exposes ugly truths about U.S. prison system

Ava DuVernay’s documentary, 13th, is set to premiere on Sept. 30 at the New York Film Festival, and ahead of its anticipated release, Netflix has released an astounding trailer.

The documentary takes a look at the Thirteenth Amendment and particularly at the clause that exempts criminals from the abolition of slavery, considering the fact that, today, the American prison system is a multi-billion dollar industry.

The trailer also hits viewers with shocking statistics like this one: “We now have more African Americans under criminal supervision than all the slaves back in the 1850s.”

Check out the trailer below. The documentary hits Netflix on Oct. 7, with a limited theatrical release.
