University offers black feminism course based on Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’

The University of Texas at San Antonio is taking the Beyoncé fandom to a whole new level.

Professor Kinitra Brooks will be teaching an entire course on the singer’s recent Lemonade album in which students will be able to “explore the theoretical, historical, and literary frameworks of black feminism” in her 55-minute video for the project, which was released in April .

The class will be called “Black Women, Beyonce & Popular Culture” and will use Lemonade as a way to jump start conversations on several other topics. Students will also read, “Teaching My Mother How to Give Birth,” by Warsan Shire, the same poet featured in Lemonade, as well as works from feminist writers Patricia Hill Collins, Toni Morrison and Gloria Naylor.

“The tone and language used in this course will not be sugarcoated. I will intentionally provoke you in order to stimulate conversation and challenge your comfort zones,” Brooks wrote in describing the class.

However, Brooks also noted that the class isn’t just for Beyonce fans.

“You do not have to be a member of the Beyhive,” she wrote. “I simply ask that you are willing to be uncomfortable — to have your thoughts and ideas challenged — and then to work/read/write your way through that Univer in order to become a stronger critical thinker.”
