Just weeks after a report surfaced describing retaliatory firing and hostile work environments in Howard County, Maryland’s police department, Sheriff James Fitzgerald is stepping down.
“Responding to concerns about Sheriff Fitzgerald and allegations of discrimination, I have diligently worked with all parties to reach a resolution so that our community can begin healing,” Howard County Council chairperson Calvin Ball said in a statement.
“This wasn’t just one call, or conversation, or press release. This was a difficult process. I believed from the instant the issue came to light that resignation was the only option, and I needed the sheriff to see that as well,” Ball added.
“After extensive negotiations, I am pleased to announce the attorneys for all parties have shared with me that a conciliation agreement in principle has been reached. The County’s Office of Law has advised that they anticipate a fully signed agreement by close of business today.”
Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman also held a press conference thanking the community for their support.
“I appreciate his resigning. I think it’s the best thing for our citizens. So, now it’s an opportunity for us to find a replacement. The governor will be replacing the sheriff, and hopefully we’ll be working with him to make sure it’s someone who can bring trust back to our sheriff’s department to ensure the people who work for the sheriff’s department are treated properly and respectfully, as well as the citizens of Howard County,” Kittleman said.
Fitzgerald signed the agreement to step down on Tuesday.
