Special-ed teacher dies after SUV hits her, bus runs her over

On Tuesday, a special education teacher was killed after being hit by an SUV and run over by a bus.

Hermanda Booker was just three blocks away from her Brooklyn home when she was crossing the street and was clipped by a white SUV. A horrified witness then told police that Booker had been run over by a yellow school bus that was attempting to make a left turn.

“There was no sound of impact,” said Lisa Lore, Booker’s neighbor, who was waiting for a bus on Kings Highway when she saw Booker being hit. “There was no screeching, no banging sound. Nothing like that. If I would have heard something, I would have gone help immediately.”

Although Booker was rushed to Beth Israel Medical Center/Kings Highway Division, she died a few hours later from her injuries.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of this young teacher,” City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña said in a statement. “My thoughts are with the school community.”

Grief counselors will be available at Highland Park Community School for both students and staff dealing with the loss of the beloved special education teacher.
