Jay Z says Kalief Browder’s death proves prison should be shut down

Jay Z believes that Rikers Island should be shut down, and he’s pointing to the upcoming Kalief Browder documentary premiering at the Sundance Film Festival as evidence.

The documentary covers the story of Browder’s wrongful imprisonment for three years, during which time he was mistreated and put in isolation. Despite being released, Browder was haunted by what happened to him and eventually committed suicide.

On Thursday, while promoting the documentary, Jay Z told reporters that this kind of news coming out of Rikers Island is just proof that the prison must be closed.

“If anything like that is happening…if that happens to one kid, any place that that can happen to any kid should be closed,” he said.
