Legislator calls for Melania Trump immigration records

In reaction to President Donald Trump’s recent actions related to immigration, especially his recent ban on refugees as well as on travel from certain Muslim-majority countries, a California state senator is calling for Melania Trump’s immigration records.

State Sen. Nancy Skinner of Berkeley made the call last week, along with Senate Pro Tem Kevin de Leon and Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, citing a finding from an AP investigation last November that Melania did not have proper work visas when she came to this country to work as a model.

“No one in the Trump operation has released any of the documentation to indicate what was the circumstance, or whether she had full legal status,’’ Skinner told Politico California in an interview. “We only know they had a lawyer look at whatever papers she chose to give.”

San Francisco attorney Harmeet Dhillon decried the effort as “below the belt” and “a cheap trolling tactic,” adding that the move was “really beneath the dignity of these California legislators.”

“I don’t think that the president’s policy positions make his wife fair game for anything,” Dhillon added, claiming that the calls were “sexist and harassing.”

However, immigration attorney David Leopold said that the move is “fair game” because of Trump’s actions on immigration, saying that the investigation raised questions as to whether Melania “had been coming into the country to work without the proper work visas, which is fraud, if its true.”
