“Let Just Be Friends” comedy perfectly explains why modern dating pretty much sucks

A famous Canadian philosopher named Aubrey Drake Graham once said: “We live in a generation of not being in love and not being together.” Turns out he’s not the only one who feels that way.

The new short film, “Let’s Just Be Friends,” starring Keith Powers (New Edition Story, Straight Outta Compton) and newcomer Pepi Sonuga, expertly conveys how the “hook up” generation has made dating complicated, confusing and outright stressful. If you’ve ever found yourself wondering why your relationship resembles a Future song instead of a 90s R&B song, you may want to watch this flick.

The project’s creator is Damilare Sonoiki, a former writer for ABC’s Black-ish and Harvard grad from Houston. (If you look closely, you’ll see Sonoiki acting in the trailer too, a-la Spike Lee).

The trailer is gaining lots of buzz online, with hilarious reactions from singles and couples alike.

Ultimately, “Let’s Just Be Friends” is a comedy about the tragedy that dating has become. So the question is: will there be a happy ending?
