Whoopi Goldberg is tired of people over-using the term “cultural appropriation.”
On Thursday’s episode of The View, the ladies discussed the controversial Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad. The ad, which portrayed Jenner joining a protest before giving a police officer a can of Pepsi, has received serious backlash and has been seen by many as appropriating the Black Lives Matter movement.
While Goldberg agrees that the ad was tasteless, however, she takes issue with calling it appropriation.
“It’s just a crappy idea, it didn’t work. [But] this cultural appropriation stuff is really starting to make me crazy. If we’re gonna go with cultural appropriation, wear natural hair. If we’re wearing white lady hair, isn’t that appropriation as well?” she said, later adding, “Listen, now, there are some things where you can say ‘Hey, you need to be more sensitive,’ but this ain’t one of them. This is a bad commercial, that didn’t work.”
In the same discussion, Sunny Hostin criticized Jenner for not questioning the ad, saying, “When you have been in this business for 10 years and in 2015 she already got reprimanded because she wore cornrows, she already had a taste of controversy. I think she should have known better.”
