A South Carolina woman is facing a child cruelty charge after hitting her son multiple times because he made a Mother’s Day card for his grandmother but not for her.
The Spartanburg Police Department was called to a house on a disturbance call to find the grandmother standing with the boy and his sister. The grandmother told police that her daughter, 30-year-old Shontrell Murphy, had hit the boy multiple times in the front, side and back of the head. The sister of the 6-year-old boy, who witnessed the assault, told police that he had been hit “really hard a few times.”

The boy’s sister explained that Murphy had hit him because she was upset that the Mother’s Day card was not for her and that she had torn up the card and hit the boy.
Murphy told police that her son has behavioral problems at school and that she did hit her son to discipline him, though she insisted that she “does not believe it was in a hard or violent manner.”
The children reportedly told police that Murphy hits them often and that they are afraid of her.
The boy was taken to the hospital and was later released after a nurse did not find signs of trauma to his head.
