First lady of Japan pretends not to speak English to avoid talking to Trump?

Japan’s first lady Akie Abe said absolutely nothing to United States President Donald Trump during a G20 summit meeting that lasted for around two hours, which led the president to believe that she simply didn’t speak any English.

In an interview with The New York Times that was published on Wednesday, Trump recalled that it was “hard” to sit next to Abe. He said that she was a “terrific woman” but added that because she “doesn’t speak English” made things difficult.

“Like, nothing, right? Like zero?” The New York TimesMaggie Haberman asked.

“Like, not ‘hello,'” Trump said.

But considering she gave a keynote address in 2014 in English, it might just be that Abe was so quiet simply because she didn’t want to talk to Trump, not because she didn’t know how.
