Twitter pressures Trump to #FireBannon amid Charlottesville hate

After a shocking weekend of violence out of Virginia in which about 20 people were injured and one person was killed when an allegedly white supremacist ran protesters over with a car, many people on Twitter and social media are calling for Steve Bannon‘s resignation.

Bannon has long been associated with the white nationalist movement, and so he is seen as the person in the White House most closely aligned with the “Unite the Right” protesters, many of whom were self-described fascists.

For example, last year, the Southern Poverty Law Center said that Bannon was “the main driver behind Breitbart becoming a white ethno-nationalist propaganda mill.”

Additionally, a spokesperson for Senator Harry Reid said that Bannon’s appointment in the White House “signals that white supremacists will be represented at the highest levels in Trump’s White House.”

With Bannon then serving as the face of the white supremacist movement within the Trump administration, in the face of the extremism and violence that occurred in Virginia, and in the face of President Donald Trump’s tepid response to the violence, blaming it on “many sides,” the internet is calling for Bannon’s removal with the hashtag #FireBannon.
