School board member resigns after calling Black members ‘darkies’

A former school board member has resigned and apologized after referring to Black members of the board as “darkies” in an email.

In August, Glenn Odom sent an email to a district employee to ask her for a ride. In the email, he also asked her not to “send it to the darkies.”

Odom resigned on October 2 after apologizing during a prayer gathering, according to the Morning News of Florence,

“I was brought up to respect people, to respect all people,” Odom told SC Now.

However, the resignation and apology isn’t enough for board member Alexis Pipkins Sr., who is calling for a review of the district’s emails. According to Pipkins, the African-American members of the board were not told about the email for a month.

Pipkins is also calling for a state and federal investigation into possible discrimination.
