Jacinda Ardern, the new Prime Minister of New Zealand, stood up for herself when U.S. President Donald Trump ribbed her about her election victory.
According to Newsroom, Ardern met Trump for the first time at the the East Asia Summit gala dinner, where Trump reportedly told someone next to him, “This lady caused a lot of upset in her country.”
Ardern took the comment in good humor and replied, “Well, you know, only maybe 40 percent!” But when Trump repeated the jab, she stood up for herself, saying, “You know, no one marched when I was elected.”
This is not the only time that Ardern and Trump have interacted, as he spoke with her on the phone after her election win. Ardern described him as having “genuinely been interested” in the election because of the coverage it had received even in American news.
