Miss South Africa, Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, has been named the new Miss Universe.
On Sunday, the 22-year-old contestant beat out Miss Colombia Laura González and Miss Jamaica Davina Bennett to take this year’s crown.
During the question and answer period of the competition, the pageant contestants were asked about a range of topics, including the recent rash of sexual assault and harassment allegations coming against big names in both Hollywood and Washington.
One of the questions also asked the contestants to list their best qualities, and Nel-Peters said that her confidence was her best quality. She said that Miss Universe was “a woman that’s overcome many fears.”
Among other prizes, Nel-Peters won a luxury New York City apartment as well as a year-long salary.
