A mother claims that her teenage children were harassed with racial epithets outside of a local bar while they were taking pictures for a school project.

Darnesha Weary‘s 18-year-old son and 14-year-old daughter had been using the light from the bar’s sign to take pictures when a bouncer from Harvey’s Lounge in Edmonds, Washington came out and asked them to leave, according to KOMO News.

Weary said that her kids left as soon as they were asked, but returned when they realized her son left behind his wallet. Instead of helping them look for their lost property, a male bouncer came out with a baseball bat, yelling racial slurs.

According to the teens, the bouncer shouted, “Get off our property, we don’t want you here and we don’t want N-words.”

“They kept saying the N-word over and over again,” the kids said.

The mom calls police

Weary said that her kids came home upset and shaken, and she called both the bar and the police.

“Immediately called 911, and they’re here taking a report now,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “I called the restaurant to inquire about the incident and the lady on the phone said that ‘she didn’t want them on her property.’ I then informed her that they were minors and working a on school project … she told me she didn’t care and that they were being ‘suspicious.’”

Police are now investigating the incident to determine whether or not a crime has been committed. According to Edmonds Police Sgt. Josh McClure, a surveillance video captured part of what happened and shows a man and a woman coming out of the bar to yell from the doorway. The bouncer does in fact have a baseball bat, but that person later set it down.

“It’s complex, it’s alarming and it has been something we have taken seriously,” McClure said.
