A Wrinkle in Time is due out on March 9, and in the weeks before the Ava DuVernay-directed film, we’re only getting more excited.
Part of the hype has to be the amazing talent that’s gone into the project, which stars the likes of Oprah Winfrey and newcomer Storm Reid. Not to mention DuVernay herself has been raving about the Disney.
And then there’s Sade, who DuVernay praised on Twitter for agreeing to work on a song for the movie.
“I never thought she’d say yes, but asked anyway. She was kind + giving. A goddess. We began a journey together that I’ll never forget,” DuVernay wrote on Tuesday.
The song, which is called “Flower of the Universe” is a “dream come true,” according to DuVernay.

Proud to announce that Sade has created an original song for WRINKLE IN TIME. It’s entitled “Flower of the Universe.” And it’s a dream come true. pic.twitter.com/FdXrZ1MFMO

A film celebrating Black women
Ava DuVernay is making history directing this film, which at $100 million has the largest budget ever given to a woman of color. However, DuVernay told Essence for their February issue that she is less interested in making history and more interested in making something for Black girls to be proud of.
“I so want Black women to love it and Black girls to love it. I want everybody to love it, but this is a love letter to us,” DuVernay said. “This is me trying to make us in a way we haven’t been rendered in film before—as a firmly centered hero in a fantasy about other worlds and as the saviors of the whole universe. Looking at everything we think we’re not, and at the end of the movie we are all of everything.”
With Black Panther currently busting up records on the silver screen, it really feels like Black creators are having a huge moment. Hopefully, this trend toward more diversity and representation will only continue to grow.
