EXCLUSIVE: Prosecutor reviews charges against firefighter who spit on Black child and called him N-word at Hooters

A Black child who attended a birthday party with family and friends at a Hooters restaurant in Overland Park, Kansas was spit upon and called the N-word by a firefighter.

The child’s grandfather who, asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation spoke to KCTV5 and said he was in disbelief.

“My whole body just went numb,” he said. “How could someone do that to a child? He’s a baby. He’s helpless. He didn’t deserve that.”

Witnesses report that they were stunned with what they saw the man do at Hooters. “He basically said get that little ‘blank’ up off the floor,” the witness explained. “The n-word started to get thrown around.”

After the racist incident, Overland police were called to the restaurant and that’s when witnesses found out that the man who assaulted the young child was a firefighter.

“I didn’t catch what the officer said to him, but his immediate response was ‘It’s ok, I’m a fireman,’ like that was supposed to blanket cover everything for him,” the witness stated.

Hooters responds to backlash after racist firefighter spits at black child

Hooters received immediate backlash over the incident and released a statement condeming the man’s actions.

“Hooters does not tolerate any harassment or discriminatory language, the safety and well-being of our guests and employees are our utmost priorities. Of course, it goes without saying that our policy is to fully cooperate with any law enforcement investigation.”

TheGrio reached out to the Overland Park police department today for comment on the status of the investigation.

“We are very bothered regarding this incident and it will NOT be ignored, we are investigating,” said Officer John P. Lacy, the Public information Officer for the Overland Police Department.

“The case has been submitted for review to our prosecutor. Hopefully we will know something soon and more information will be forth coming.”
