Lucy McBath, mother of murdered teenager Jordan Davis, is now the Democratic nominee for Georgia’s 6th Congressional district. McBath beat out Kevin Abel to snag the victory.
The gun reform advocate lost her son Jordan in 2012 when a stranger named Michael Dunn shot Jordan in a parking lot for playing music out of a car. Dunn is now serving a life sentence in prison. The former flight attendant announced her bid for the seat this past March after the deadly school shooting in Parkland, FL.

McBath posted a thank you to her supporters in the wee hours of the morning after her win. “I am at a loss for words. Thank you to my supporters, friends, and family. And I want to thank my dear Jordan, my rock and inspiration. We deserve better representation in DC,” she wrote.
I am at a loss for words. Thank you to my supporters, friends & family. And I want to thank my dear Jordan, my rock & inspiration. We deserve better representation in DC, and I intend to show the good people of #GA06 what a tough, determined mother can do. On to November! pic.twitter.com/OqXCbw53cu

If McBath wins the general election against Republican Karen Handel in November, she will make history as the only Black woman in Georgia’s Congressional delegation. It will be a tough election for McBath. According to ABC News, a democrat has not represented her district since 1979.
McBath also faces an uphill battle with funding. FEC filings show that McBath had $151,000 in her campaign’s bank account while Handel heads to the general election with a $1 million war chest.
Despite the odds, McBath remains hopeful and she has support from Stacey Abrams, who is also looking to make history in politics. Abrams is running for governor of Georgia and if she wins, she would be the first Black woman in the US to hold such a position.
Congrats to #GA06 nominee @LucyWins2018, #GA07 nominee @Carolyn4GA7 & State Superintendent nominee @OthaThornton on your grassroots victories tonight! With @GeorgiaDemocrat candidates that reflect our values & hear our voices, we are ready to lead our state forward in Nov. #gapol
